Shooting suspect found in hotel

A man accused in a shooting on a West Mifflin basketball court last week has been arrested by Braddock Hills police.

Daymond "Day Day" Wiggins, 19, was found about 5 p.m. Thursday inside the Holiday Inn on Brinton Road with a 15-year-old described as his girlfriend, said Braddock Hills police Officer Brandon Shields.

Wiggins immediately was handed over to West Mifflin police, who charged him with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, carrying a firearm without a license and possessing an instrument of crime.

West Mifflin police Chief Frank Diener said Wiggins shot Andre Robinson, 27, of Midway Drive, West Mifflin, on July 11 in the upper chest after an argument at a basketball court in the Mon View Heights housing development. Robinson was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, Oakland. Officials there declined to release his condition Friday. Wiggins' address is listed as Midway Drive, though police believe he recently was evicted from the housing complex.

Braddock Hills police went to the Holiday Inn to check on the welfare of Angel Harris, 21, of East Liberty, at the request of her family. Harris is an acquaintance of Wiggins'.

Once they arrived, they found Wiggins, Shields said.

Harris had rented a room and faces charges of hindering the apprehension of a fugitive, Shields said.

"Angel allegedly knew who Daymond was and that he was wanted," Shields said. "They all knew he was wanted."

Diener said Wiggins was playing basketball with a cousin and became agitated when Robinson jumped into the game. Police said Wiggins threatened to get a gun, and Robinson replied, "Act like a man, forget about the gun."

Police said Wiggins then went to a nearby parking lot, retrieved a gun from behind a tree, ran toward Robinson and shot him at close range before fleeing.
