Comcast on Tuesday revealed a new "TV Everywhere" platform, called Fancast Xfinity TV, that gives HBO and other cable channels immediately to a majority of its 15.7 million high-speed Internet customers nationwide.

Formerly known as On Demand Online when introduced this summer to test households, the service gives access to thousands of hours of movies, network television and cable programming. Customers go to comcast.net or fancast.com Web sites, and sign in using a Comcast e-mail user name and password.

The service is free to eligible customers, at home or via laptop computer when on the go.

Comcast has 850,000 customers in Southwestern Pennsylvania, and parts of Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland.

"This launch represents almost a year of work, with teams from across Comcast," said Amy Banse, president of Comcast Interactive Media, during a conference call. Banse added even with the nationwide rollout, Xfinity remains a test program, with troubleshooting corrections still to come.

Available now are up to 27 channels, including HBO and Cinemax, along with CBS, History, AMC, E! Entertainment, TNT, the Food Network and TBS.

"This represents another milestone, offering more content, anytime, anywhere," said Matt Bond, Comcast's executive vice president of content acquisition. "We expect over time that the number of networks available and the amount of content available through this platform only will grow."

Banse said Comcast plans within the next six months to extend the Xfinity service to its 24 million video-only subscribers, and to make the service available on mobile devices sometime next year.
