Environmentalists charge Russia plans to turn vast areas of Siberia into a dump for nuclear waste from around the world in exchange for a huge profit. Russian authorities concede the idea is being actively examined, Britain's Independent newspaper reported Tuesday. Rosatom, Russia's federal nuclear power agency, says the plan can help the country earn foreign exchange. One estimate is Russia could earn $20 billion over 10 years, the newspaper said. Greenpeace Russia says the International Atomic Energy Agency has Russia in mind for a global waste dump and the matter is likely to be discussed at a conference in New York this month and one in Moscow in June. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
