Singapore, already one of the world’s safest big cities, is installing more closed-circuit television cameras in public areas to combat terrorism and crime. Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng said Saturday every school will be patrolled by security guards and fitted with as many as 12 cameras during the next few months, the Straits Times reported. Wong said the cameras enable authorities to immediately dispatch officers to defuse potential terrorist activities if they are caught on tape. “We know we’re a target. When will it happen, should it happen, we don’t know,” he said. “But we cannot take chances. We cannot afford to be complacent and wait for it to happen before we start to look at all the measures.” © Copyright 2004 by United Press International
