Singapore made the most of technological progress over the past year while the United States fell to No. 5 on the World Economic Forum’s list. The Geneva-based group whose members include some of the biggest private companies in the world said Singapore made the most use of information and communications technology developments. The WEF survey evaluates a slew of factors, including the quality of math and science education, affordability of phone connection charges and government procurement of information technology. The WEF’s annual report on global information technology ranked the United States in fifth place, having maintained the top position over the past years. But the “loss in rank is less due to actual erosion in performance … and more to continuing improvements by its competitors,” the group said. Iceland ranked second place, followed by Finland and Denmark in third and fourth place, respectively. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
