The music said it all in 2003 when Cat Power songstress Chan Marshall released the wholly beautiful “You are Free,” and began the slow journey to liberate herself. In 2006, it seems Marshall is ready to let loose. Once awkward and unsure of herself onstage, Marshall is praised in recent show reviews in HARP magazine and The Village Voice for poking her head from her shell. While no one can guarantee she won’t stop mid-song or run offstage without explanation, Marshall’s confidence seems boosted by her presence in front of this tour’s backing band. The Memphis Rhythm Band — a large group of experienced musicians playing horns, strings and everything in between — currently supports Marshall on some of her tour dates, including her visit to Hartwood Acres Sunday. Some of the band’s members also performed on January’s “The Greatest,” Marshall’s fifth release on Matador Records. On this latest release, her soft but soulful vocals were given an extra punch from legendary musicians like Mabon “Teenie” Hodges, who has worked with Al Green, and brother Leroy “Flick” Hodges. The 30-something singer-songwriter has been writing her blues-tinged music since the early ’90s, but her fan base continues to spread across indie rock, blues and soul crowds. While fans know Marshall creates captivating originals, she also has a knack for transforming others’ music. In 2000, she released an album of 12 covers, including The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and The Velvet Underground’s “I Found a Reason.” On this tour, fans might hear covers such as Ray Charles’ “Hit the Road Jack” or the Everly Brothers’ “All You Have to Do is Dream,” but the majority of her set will probably pull from “The Greatest.” With continued success and an ever-growing throng of admirers, it doesn’t matter whether Marshall gets nervous onstage or not. Those who love her will still say she’s “The Greatest.” Additional Information:
