GILLESPIE - State Department of Transportation officials took safety precautions Monday after a sinkhole opened on private property near Route 201, about a mile south of Fayette City.

Resident Leo Makovsky Jr. said he discovered the hole in his driveway Sunday morning.

He said Monday evening that the hole had grown to about 30 feet deep and was 30 feet by 15 feet wide.

"You can look in the hole and look under (Route) 201," he said. "It doesn't look very safe. You can see it just peeling off and loosening while you're standing there."

Makovsky said the hole, which he believes leads to an old mine shaft, caused cracks on Route 201.

"It should be blocked off. My concern is that a truck is going to go over it and loosen it up," he said.

PennDOT spokeswoman Valerie Petersen said safety barriers have been placed at the hole. She said crews will fill the hole as early as today. Petersen said there is water in the hole. Crews will first pour stone into the hole so water can run and fill it the rest of the way with milling material.

Milling material is old paving material that is scraped from roads prior to the application of new paving material.
