A 65-mile stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike east of Breezewood will close late Saturday for the demolition of an overhead bridge, officials said.
The Turnpike will be closed from 11 p.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Sunday between the Breezewood and Carlisle interchanges, while crews use explosives to demolish the bridge carrying Dyarman Road over the turnpike in North Middleton.
Single-lane closures near the bridge will start at 4 p.m. so workers can prepare for demolition.
The blasting is expected to take place at midnight, after state police have cleared the area of all traffic and pedestrians. By 4 a.m., one lane in each direction might reopen, and all lanes will reopen when cleanup from the blasting is completed, turnpike officials said.
Drivers exiting at Breezewood or Carlisle will receive cards with the official detour printed on them. The 30-minute, 33-mile detour along Interstates 81 and 70 could not be shortened because shorter routes would not safely accommodate the volume of traffic being diverted, officials said.
