Two New York runaways likely would have been raped in Minnesota if the dog they were traveling with didn't have bad gas, alerting authorities.

The two girls, 12- and 15-years-old, took off from their home Monday and took the family dog, Bambi, with them on a Greyhound bus bound for Minneapolis.

They said it was a Seeing-Eye dog.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports they were meeting 22-year-old Manuel Alvarado, who was charged in January with having sex with the 15-year-old.

On the trip to meet him again, the girls fed Bambi junk food, prompting such bad gas, other passengers complained, and the driver called the authorities to meet them at a Cleveland station.

The two girls are at the Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services, and Bambi was taken home by a detective.
