Smoke detector aids West Deer couple's escape

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

A couple escaped injury early yesterday when fire destroyed their modular home on Bakerstown-Culmerville Road in West Deer.

West Deer No. 1 Volunteer Fire Chief Mel Wick said the fire started apparently in a living room about 4 a.m. The Allegheny County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating, but the blaze does not appear suspicious, Wick said.

Smoke detectors woke the sleeping couple, who escaped unharmed. Their three children were staying with family members and weren't at home, Wick said.

The American Red Cross was assisting the family with clothing and food.
