Smugly superior

It seems the women who are happy with the proposed beer-tax increase (" Women toast beer tax ," Letters, May 1) had a dual purpose in writing their letter.

The first was to agitate and feel smug about it. The second was to proclaim that it is society's responsibility to raise their children, not theirs, and feel smug about it.

What a win-win situation for them. They can go out and drink all the beer they want and fantasize that they are helping their children. The only loser, of course, is the child who fails to get the moral guidance and leadership that is so necessary in the early years.

These women probably never have to buy their own beer anyway, if they actually do drink beer.
