So Many Questions: Health-food diva Lizanne Falsetto says we have the power to change
Twenty years ago, Lizanne Falsetto had absolutely no idea that the homemade protein bars she was making in her kitchen as something to snack on would someday turn into a multimillion-dollar business.
As founder and CEO of ThinkThin, she’s been able to share her “Protein Is Sexy” signature philosophy — especially with women.
Male or female, however, at the end of the day, it’s up to each individual to make a conscious decision to engage healthier eating habits, she says. Gimmicks might seem like a comfortable option; but, sometimes it’s as simple as choosing the fruit over the Fritos.
Q: Isn’t eating well as simple as making the decision to do so?
A: Absolutely. I think it’s stress and pressure and temptation, you know? It’s the temptation of what comes in front of you that causes whether you’re in balance or not. I think it really does start with balance, though. I think if you really looked at anything in any decision that you’re going to make — whether it’s physical or mental balance — where is the balance? Where are you? And so, I always say it’s an awareness of where you are personally. And we’re so busy and going so much, I think people sometimes don’t think about themselves: “How am I feeling? Am I mentally fatigued? Am I physically fatigued? Where is my body right now? Am I feeling something in my body right now?” You know, I think there’s a lot of that that happens.
Q: Why do we tend to rely on gimmicks instead of just accepting that we need to cut out the garbage?
A: Because it’s a great excuse! It’s a great excuse and it’s easy, you know? I hate to say it, but I think that gimmicks — there’s a level of comfort that comes into play with it. Now, whether that’s right or wrong, it is a level of comfort.
Q: Health and wellness are always hot topics, yet we keep hearing we are as fat as ever — where’s the disconnect?
A: If you look at 20 years ago when I started in the industry, the natural-health mentality was you have to wear Birkenstocks to go in to shop at a natural health-food store. And I used to always say to the Whole Foods people, “Kick off those Birkenstocks and put on your Gucci!” because it doesn’t matter what you wear.
I think when you look at health and you look at often being able to really explore what is available through foods and vitamins and supplements and different wellness type of tips is that again. It comes back to awareness and what you want for yourself as a choice.
Q: If someone is struggling, what is the most important first step toward achieving that balance?
A: Well, the first step is just that — being aware of it. You know what they say? They say that people who are sick are the healthiest they’ve ever been. And you know why? Because they are forced to look at their health. They’re forced to say to themselves, “You know what? I’m going to make a change. I’ve got to make a change for the better.” And it’s because they had that time-out card, you know?
And so, I would say to be extremely conscious and aware of what is happening in yourself first. Really saying to yourself, “You know, I really need to lose weight,” or, “I really need to eat better,” or, “I don’t want to drink so much alcohol anymore; I don’t feel good.” And making a conscious effort. People are very powerful in the way that they think about making changes, and I really do think that if you put your mind to it, and if you believe in it, you can do it. You can make the changes and make it happen.
