Some charges were dropped Monday against a man held in a drug bust last month. Varick L. Benson, 18, of Quay Street, East Vandergrift, had been charged with having crack and heroin, possessing drugs with intent to sell them, having a small amount of marijuana, and criminal conspiracy to sell drugs. On Monday, District Judge Bernice McCutcheon in Vandergrift held to court the conspiracy charge but dismissed all other charges. She also reduced his bond from $10,000 to a $2,500 percentage bond. He was anticipated to pay the $250 and be released from the Westmoreland County Prison. Vandergrift police, who also patrol East Vandergrift, also charged Tameka L. Evans, 33, also of Quay Street and an unidentified 17-year-old girl. Evans' preliminary hearing is slated for next month in McCutcheon's courtroom. The girl's charges are being separately handled by juvenile court. Police said they encountered the three when checking on a 911 hang-up call at the house. When the officer knocked on the door to ask if anyone needed help, the girl allegedly slammed the door in his face. The officer said he saw three people run toward the back door. When stopped outside the house, police say the three had about six ounces of powdered and crack cocaine, almost 40 stamp bags of heroin, loose heroin in a baggy and some marijuana. Police say they also found $3,353 in cash, a digital scale and baggies and stamp bags used to package the cocaine and heroin.
