Some to be able to get free credit report

Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, the three U.S. consumer credit reporting agencies, are beginning to give consumers a free annual credit report.

Beginning Dec. 1, consumers in 13 western states will be able to request a free annual credit report by contacting the Web site annualcreditreport.com or calling 877-322-8228.

Those in the following states are eligible for the free credit report: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

By Sept. 1, 2005, free annual reports are to be phased in across the rest of the nation.

The Federal Trade Commission said annualcreditreport.com is the only authorized source for consumers to access their credit reports online without charge.
