South Fayette board asked to OK adding 3 teachers

Three teaching positions and other items could be added to South Fayette School District’s 2008-09 budget, with higher-than-expected additional revenue.

Superintendent Dr. Linda Hippert said more property assessments and state money than expected will come to the district.

The assessment change will create an additional $320,000 in tax collections, and an increase in state subsidies will bring the district almost $41,000 more than anticipated.

That brings the district’s projected total revenue to about $30.4 million.

Last month, the board approved a $30.6 million preliminary budget for 2008-09 that would raise the district’s property tax rate by 1.18 mills to 24.32 mills.

The district’s administration is recommending that the school board use the additional money to place a number of items in the budget, including three teaching positions, activity buses, a contribution to the hockey club, volleyball shorts and two mobile carts for the elementary school.

“We really feel we need to improve technology in the elementary school,” she said.

With those changes, the district would need to spend about $553,000 from its reserve accounts, cutting them to about $853,000.

Administrators recommend maintaining the 1.18-mill tax increase.

After-school activity buses were eliminated from the preliminary budget the board approved last month.

The school board must adopt a final budget by June 30.

The matter is scheduled to be discussed at each board meeting, on the third and fourth Tuesdays of the month, at 7 p.m. in the high school conference center.
