Word-count restraints limit a true and in-depth response to the letter from Joseph Troxler of Tennessee, regarding the “true cause” of the War of Southern Rebellion ( “History, Southern-style,” Feb. 3). As he is concerned about truth in reporting history, to deny the role slavery played in the South’s illegal decision to remove itself from the union plays into the hands of the South’s history revisionists. We can argue until the cows fly home with pigs riding them about the real causes of the Civil War. But how does Troxler argue the South’s “honorable cause” in light of Article 1, Section 10 of our Constitution, which states “No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation … ?” This section is titled “Powers Denied to the States.” The real truth, sir, is that your ancestors did not wish to comply with the legitimate law of the land, which their ancestors had left to govern them. Words such as anarchy and treason come to mind. Diane K. Landau Allison Park
