Spanish authorities on Thursday said they seized some 3.5 tons of cocaine bound from Venezuela, El Mundo newspaper reported online.

The cocaine was arriving by a fishing boat from Venezuela. Spanish police acting on a tip from U.S. authorities intercepted the shipment.

The Spanish coast is often a drop-off spot for drugs smuggled by sea from South America to continental Europe.

Earlier this year, authorities in Portugal discovered 4.2 tons of cocaine in a warehouse north of the capital, Lisbon. The drugs were reportedly set to be delivered to neighboring Spain.
