Spain beat Sweden, 2-1, to reach the quarterfinals of soccer's European Championship, as defending champion Greece was eliminated after a 1-0 loss to Russia on Saturday.
Spain striker David Villa secured the win in injury time in Innsbruck, Austria, with his fourth goal in two matches. Russia's win, with a goal from Konstantin Zyryanov, then ensured Spain's spot in the last eight.
"I think we were the better side, particularly in the second half," Spain coach Luis Aragones said. "You could see Sweden were really very tired, and we had the chances."
Spain joins the Netherlands, Portugal and Croatia in the quarterfinals. It led for the first time yesterday when Fernando Torres scored after 15 minutes, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic replying for Sweden 19 minutes later.
Spain tops Group D with six points from two of three games, Sweden and Russia have three points, while Greece has none after losing twice. Sweden and Russia meet Wednesday in the last round of group matches.
Greece, a surprise winner four years ago, lost its chance to become the first nation to successfully defend the European title after its loss to Russia.
Russia scored after 33 minutes in Salzburg when Greece goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis failed to collect a cross from Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. Sergei Semak hooked the ball back across goal for Zyryanov to tap into an empty net.
Today, the Czech Republic and Turkey meet to decide which team will join Portugal in advancing from Group A, and Portugal faces Switzerland.
