Special salute to our troops
To the editor:
The 36th Annual Apollo Moon Landing Celebration was a huge success for the Apollo community and the steering committee extends a big “thank you” to those individuals, school and community non-profit groups and business sponsors for their participation and support.
Apollo Volunteer Fire Department, Hose Co. 2, primary sponsor of the Apollo Moon Landing Celebration, is most appreciative of those Alle-Kiski Valley residents that continue to attend and support the annual community event. The celebration brings out the best in community spirit and traditional values, and it serves concurrently as a major fundraiser for the fire department.
A “thank you” is extended to Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell who issued a proclamation in recognition of the 36th Annual Apollo Moon Landing Celebration, noting the national achievement in space exploration by NASA and Apollo as a community which shares the same name as the space program of the 1960’s.
Swank Steel City Shows and the Apollo Moon Landing Celebration, Inc. have an outstanding, professional and business relationship and work together to provide a wholesome week of family-oriented enjoyment and activities for the public. A special thank you is extended to the Apollo-Ridge School District and the Borough of Apollo for the use of public grounds and facilities.
Citizens from throughout the region attend the week-long celebration, finding that the music concerts in the park, amusement rides and food concessions, family night and the fireworks extravangza are among the most popular attractions for children and families. With the continued support of the community and business sponsors, the Apollo Moon Landing Celebration will expand family activities in the future.
The “Music in the Park” concerts held at the Spec. Joshua J. Henry Memorial Gazebo, Owens Grove, were well-attended by Alle-Kiski Valley residents this year. The Kittanning Firemen’s Band, Kiski Valley Community Band and Gibbons Big Band performed through the week and by popular demand will most likely be scheduled for next year’s celebration. A special thank you is extended to the Leonard C. Miller Home of Adelphoi Village youth for their assistance with seating arrangements for the general public.COMCAST was the first major corporate sponsor of the Apollo Moon Landing Celebration. Gerald Medice Funeral Home and Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. were major corporate sponsors of the celebration. Other community business sponsors included Schreck RV, Watterson State Farm Insurance, Murphy’s Music Center, Kiski Valley Uniforms and Supply, and Leechburg Fox’s Pizza.
Congratulations were extended to Glenn Bush Ford, Inc. as recipient of the “2005 Good Neighbor Award” for its outstanding cooperation with the celebration committee for 35 years.
A special thank you is extended to State Rep. Jeff Pyle and the Armstrong County Board of Commissioners — Patricia Kirkpatrick, James Scahill and Rich Fink — for attending the opening ceremonies of the celebration, offering distinguished comments and greeting the general public.
Special thanks to school, church and community organizations for participation this year: Apollo Area Pool and Regional Recreation Authority, Apollo Hose Co. 2 Ladies Auxiliary, North Apollo Church of God adult and youth groups, Apollo Bible Presbyterian Church, Apollo First Lutheran Church, Apollo-Ridge Touchdown Club, Vandergrift Fire Department No. 2, Apollo Area Youth Sports Association, and Rainbow Emergency Communications Operations.
“Pride in our past and faith in our future” continues to be the theme in which our volunteers work for the good of our Apollo community. For those who know community service best, understand the breath and depth of that pride and faith in a community.
On behalf of the Apollo Moon Landing Celebration, we greatly appreciate participation and support from the public, with the hope and promise of future celebrations that continue to build upon the rich, traditional heritage of our community and its people.
