Speed, alcohol blamed in Sewickley Township crash

State police said alcohol and speed were factors in a pickup crash in Sewickley Township early Sunday that left four Texans hospitalized in Pittsburgh, one of them in critical condition.

The four men, employees of Patterson UTI Energy Inc. of Houston, were injured at 1 a.m. Sunday near 2209 Mars Hill Road when the truck went off the road and hit two trees, state police at Greensburg said. The Ford crew cab hit one tree and spun clockwise before slamming head-on into a tree 20 feet away, police said.

Jeffrey McKay, 32, of Leander, who was found hanging out the right rear door, was listed in critical condition in Allegheny General Hospital's shock trauma unit Wednesday, spokesman Daniel Laurent said. Travis McGee, 24, of Breckenridge, who was ejected through the back window and onto the truck bed, was listed in fair condition at the hospital.

Two other occupants, Chad Butler, 27, of Stephenville and Jason Thomas, 43, of Weatherford were in good condition at UPMC Presbyterian, a spokeswoman said. Butler was partially ejected through the right side of the windshield, while Thomas landed atop Butler after he was partially ejected through the same section of the windshield.

Butler, Thomas and McKay had to be extricated by firefighters from Herminie, Sutersville and Sewickley, police said. All four men were flown by helicopter to the hospitals.

None was wearing a seat belt, police said. The men were in the area to work on a Marcellus shale drilling site, police said.

The state police forensic services unit and a Troop A accident-reconstruction expect assisted in the investigation.
