Spiritual getaways require planning, too

Rex Rutkoski

Before booking your "spiritual vacation," there is an important question to ask yourself:

What do you want out of it?

The answer can help you have a more rewarding time.

In most cases, retreat and spirituality centers and houses of prayer offer considerable flexibility, allowing you to design your own experience and to be as alone as you want, or to be in the company of others.

Those who hunger for time to be on their own with their thoughts, to take long walks amidst nature, to do some serious reading away from distractions or to sit in a chapel or a quiet space and just be, have that opportunity.

Those who want to interact with a spiritual director who will help them focus their reflections, or with other retreatants, usually can arrange for that.

Among other points to consider when deciding where to go:

1. Are there structured activities, or am I on my own?

2. What do I need to bring• What is provided?

3. What kind of food is served, if any• Can special diets be accommodated?

4. What are the reservation policies?

5. What facilities -- such as chapels, libraries, grounds -- are available to me?

6. How long can I stay?

7. Can I have visitors•

8. What clothing is recommended?

9. What kind of reading material should I consider taking?

10. During the inner dialogue with myself, what questions might I ponder on this retreat?
