BERLIN - The German Open was supposed to be a showdown between Martina Hingis , Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati .

No one told France's Amelie Mauresmo or Belgium's Justine Henin .

Mauresmo took care of the top-ranked Hingis 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 in Saturday's semifinals, while Henin came close to ousting the other two stars single-handedly.

Henin, who had already upset Williams, sprained her ankle against Capriati and retired in a dramatic end to a close match against the No. 4-ranked American.

Capriati was in front 6-2, 4-6, 2-1 with the 18-year-old leading 40-30 in the fourth game when she slipped while lunging for a deep shot at the $1.185 million event.

  • Defending French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten rolled into the Italian Open final with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sweden's Andreas Vinciguerra . Kuerten will face rising clay-court star Juan Carlos Ferrero , who beat Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti 6-3, 6-3 in yesterday's other semifinal.

    BASEBALL
    Ryan Lemke , a Franklin Regional graduate, has been selected to the Verizon Academic All-America College Division II first team. A catcher for Indiana (Pa.), Lemke played in 39 of 41 games this season and batted .295 with five doubles, two triples and three home runs. He has a 3.93 grade point average.

    BASKETBALL
    Kwame Brown, a 6-foot-11 forward-center from Glynn Academy in Brunswick, Ga., has decided to bypass the University of Florida and head straight to the NBA. Brown, a projected top-five draft pick, released a statement yesterday saying he chose the pros to help his family.

  • Jim Thomas , who played on Indiana's 1981 national championship team, has been hired by the Hoosiers as an assistant coach, The Indianapolis Star reported.

    GOLF

  • Defending champion Pat Hurst birdied her final hole to take a one-stroke lead over Annika Sorenstam and Catriona Matthew in the Electrolux USA Championship in Franklin, Tenn. Hurst shot a 2-under-par 70 for an 11-under 205 total in the rain-plagued tournament that was suspended because of darkness with 18 players still on the course.

  • Sweden's Henrik Stenson shot a 1-under 71 to take a three-stroke lead after the third round of the Benson and Hedges International in Sutton Coldfield, England.

  • American Dean Wilson shot an even-par 71 to give himself a comfortable eight-stroke lead over Satoshi Higashi after the third round of the Japan PGA Championship.

    HOCKEY

    Sami Kapanen scored two goals within 1:41 of the third period, helping Finland to a 3-1 victory over the United States in the semifinals of the World Hockey Championships in Hanover, Germany.

    HORSE RACING

    Katz Me If You Can beat Lucky Livi by three-quarters of a length in the $150,000,Grade II Genuine Risk Handicap for fillies and mares at Belmont, N.Y.

  • Kudos won his fourth straight race, beating Indigo Myth by 1 1/2 lengths in the $75,000 Jim Murray Memorial Handicap at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif.

  • Favored Kalu beat Proud Man by three-quarters of a length in the $250,000 Grade III Hawthorne Derby on the turf at Hawthorne Race Course in Chicago.

    MOUNTAIN CLIMBING
    Walter Keller Jr . of Bethel Park is climbing Mt. Everest as part of a British American Lightweight Everest Expedition. A physicist/engineer, Keller has climbed throughout the United States, Tibet, Pakistan and South America.

    JURISPRUDENCE

    Former Missouri basketball star Derrick Chievous has been charged with felony stealing for allegedly taking items from the United Parcel Service terminal where he had worked for nine months in Columbia, Mo.

    SOCCER

    Pitt soccer coach Roland Sturk signed five players. They are Cara Senger (Oakland Catholic), Laura Boehm (South Park), Krystian James (Las Vegas, Nev.), Lane Graor (Broadview Height, Ohio) and Geraldine Loveless (Manassas, Va.).

  • Groups of Neapolitan fans smashed several parked cars, set a vehicle on fire and clashed with riot police outside the San Paolo Stadium on Saturday following Napoli's 4-2 loss to Lazio of Rome in Naples, Italy.

    Marion Jones continued her stretch of success with a victory in her first 100-meter dash of the 2001 season at the Golden Spike Tour season opener in Princeton, N.J. Jones, the Olympic gold medalist in the 100, finished in 11.12 seconds, far slower than her time of 10.75 seconds in Sydney.
