Some Unity Township residents may soon have something many take for granted -- municipal water.
A $300,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Safe Water program issued Thursday will allow the township to extend water lines to serve 135 homes near Lightcap and Crabtree roads and near Nine Mile Run and Route 982 in Baggaley.
Township Supervisor Mike O'Barto said $180,000 of the funding will go toward the Baggaley project, where 89 homes will potentially be served, and the remainder will go to completing the Lightcap/Crabtree project, with 46 homes.
"That's significant -- we've never received a grant that large from the state for a water line extension project," O'Barto said yesterday.
"These are people that could not wash clothes at home, and their water quality and quantity was poor."
In other business, supervisors approved a plan to modify the 7-11/BP Station at the Route 30 split to include a new building and revised parking layout.
Supervisors showed one of six green-and-white township signs, all of which have been or will be placed at various points along the township's borders.
The board also approved intermunicipal mutual aid agreements with Greensburg and Derry Township. The move makes each of the three municipality's insurance carriers responsible for coverage of their own responders even if an injury or death were to occur in one of the other areas involved in the agreement, O'Barto said.
Supervisors are also accepting nominees for the 2006 Unity Township Distinguished Youth Award, given to township youths ages 6 to 18 who performed a good deed or who participate in a community-oriented activity. Letters of recommendation must include the nominee's name and address and telephone number of the nominator. They should be sent to the township municipal building at 154 Beatty County Road, Latrobe PA 15650. The deadline is Dec. 8.
Trick or treat will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 31, and those interested should leave their porch light on.
The next meeting is at 7 p.m. Nov. 9.
