Step away from … that Happy Meal, kid!
Watch out, Cracker Jack: Those prizes in your boxes could make your product the next target of the loopy-left Bay Area Grinches.
A veto-proof vote by the Grinches — aka the San Francisco Board of Supervisors — effectively bans McDonald’s Happy Meals in that city as of December 2011 by forbidding free toys with restaurant meals that exceed specified levels of calories, sugar and fat.
If that’s not enough to make you choke on your golden-brown fries, consider this: The measure’s sponsor, Supervisor Eric Mar, says it’s part of “an agenda of food justice.” Looks like the “social justice” crowd has a new buzzword to express its unshakeable faith in government always knowing what’s best.
A McDonald’s spokeswoman provides a serving of sanity:
“Parents tell us it’s their right and responsibility — not the government’s — to make their own decisions and to choose what’s right for their children.” Except, the Grinches of course say, if we declare otherwise.
Yes, childhood obesity is a real problem, one that can be exacerbated by excessive consumption of fast food. But what’s “excessive”⢠That should be left up to parents, not dictated by extremist nanny-state self-righteousness that tramples individual rights and consumer choice.
