New Stanton

Bridge work to briefly

stop turnpike traffic

Drivers using the Pennsylvania Turnpike between Irwin and New Stanton may encounter 15-minute stoppages late tonight and into Wednesday morning and late Thursday night and into Friday morning for overhead bridge work at Milepost 70.4, according to turnpike officials.

Intermittent stoppages of all traffic, eastbound and westbound, are planned between 11 p.m. today and 6 a.m. Wednesday and between 11 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday so crews can set concrete beams for a new overhead bridge that will carry Pa. Route 136 (Greensburg Road) across the turnpike.

When stoppages occur, all lanes will be affected. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions and other circumstances.

Greensburg Road has been closed at the construction site since Jan. 28. The new bridge is expected to open around Labor Day.

Replacement of the Route 136 overpass is part of a $6.4 million project contracted to J.F. Shea Construction Inc. of Mt. Pleasant. The contract includes removal and replacement of an overhead bridge at Milepost 74.2 carrying Glenn Fox Road.

Jury acquits man

of sex assault charges

A Donegal Township man has been acquitted of the rape of a young girl.

After two days of testimony, a Westmoreland County jury last week returned a not-guilty verdict against Richard A. Myers, who had faced 16 charges involving sexual assaults against a child.

Myers, 30, formerly of Unity, testified he did not have any sexual contact with the girl.

His accuser claimed that the abuse started when she was 6 years old and continued for four years, ending after she alerted authorities about the alleged assaults in late 2006.

She told police that Myers forced her to watch pornographic movies, then touched her in a sexual manner.

Jurors deliberated more than six hours on Friday before returning the verdict.
