Strut, a free magazine debuting in Detroit, aims to provide fun, light articles for smart women looking for a break, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.

"We're hoping that it's more like an exotic French pastry than a Twinkie," said Alan Lenhoff, general manager of Third Street Publications, which publishes Strut.

The monthly, with an initial distribution of 40,000 in Detroit, features personal essays on topics such as fat, regifting and dressing for parties, pages of artistic photos and Q-and-As with local celebrities.

"A lot of the magazines I see in the marketplace, they all tend to tell women what to do and assume that women need fixing and that they aren't fine as they are," said Theresa Falzone, Strut's creative manager, adding the goal is to celebrate "smart, sexy, sassy" women.

To help awareness, 10,000 copies will be mailed to women selected from marketing lists for the next three issues and 50,000 will be given away at downtown events.
