Study: Poor air quality in British bars

Researchers with portable air monitors visited 64 bars in England and found the bars -- especially the ones that serve the poor -- had poor air quality. Average levels of particles in the bars were about 10 times higher than those typically found next to heavily traveled roads in Britain -- and in four pubs the levels were about 40 times higher. "We found very poor air quality in these pubs. This research supports the recent House of Commons vote to make all workplaces in England, including pubs and bars, smoke-free," said Dr. Richard Edwards of the University of Manchester. "This research confirms that workers and customers in pubs are heavily exposed to pollution from passive smoking, particularly in pubs in more deprived areas." © Copyright 2006 by United Press International
