A new study shows that women who have caesarean pregnancies will scar less if doctors close the membrane that lines the abdomino-pelvic walls.
The study by the Stanford University School of Medicine also shows future caesarean operations will be less difficult if the parietal peritoneum is closed.
Over 1 million caesarean sections are conducted each year.
The finding was detailed in the August issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and contradicts recent studies of the procedure conducted on non-pregnant women.
Dr. Deirdre Lyell, the lead author of the article, says the Stanford study isn't the definitive study on the topic, but because research was done on pregnant women, it is the most authoritative to date.
