Robert Redford's Sundance Cinemas has bought San Francisco's Kabuki 8 Theatre, which it will run as a state-of-the-art independent movie house.

"As San Francisco holds a special place in my heart and is one of the nation's great centers of independent film, I am particularly excited to have found such a perfect home for Sundance in this city," Redford was quoted as saying by The Hollywood Reporter.

Sundance will take over the theater before or during the San Francisco International Film Festival next month, The Reporter said.

Sundance is building a six-screen complex in Madison, Wis., and has "two or three more theater deals in the pipeline," Sundance's Bert Manzari said.

"We plan to opportunistically and quickly grow this circuit in major metropolitan areas," Manzari said.

He said Sundance will become "an integral part of the local filmmaking community," everywhere it opens a movie house.
