In a lock-step march over the cliff of credibility, the Democratic National Committee refuses to distance itself from the looney-tune lament of Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., who recently compared President Bush to the late Theophilus “Bull” Connor — the police commissioner from Birmingham, Ala., who symbolized racism. When asked by The New York Sun whether the DNC repudiated Mr. Rangel’s rant, a spokesman declined to comment. More’s the pity: A grip on reality is a terrible thing to lose. … Reports of crime and violence in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina have been widely exaggerated. Authorities say rumors — such as accounts of roving gangs that raped and pillaged in the Superdome — had no basis in fact. Did Big Media simply fall down on the job — again⢠Or did liberal scribes and leftist news anchors have an agenda in painting the darkest scenario imaginable⢠… A new Gallup Poll finds Americans’ trust in the media is up significantly from last year — but still lagging from years past. The most common public perception is that the media’s political leanings are too liberal. … A Pew Hispanic Center study shows illegal immigration increased dramatically from 2003 to 2004. The number of illegals jumped by more than 110,000. This, around the same time President Bush announced his amnesty plan for illegals. It’s like trying to fix a badly leaking faucet by turning up the water pressure.
