Support grows for traffic signal at Route 119/Quarry Street
MOUNT PLEASANT – Add one more group to the already long list of those who support installing a traffic signal at the intersection of Route 119 and Quarry Street.
Quarry Street resident Robert Stefl feels the intersection is unsafe and recently began circulating a petition to install a traffic light. Stefl was in attendance at Thursday’s meeting of the East Huntingdon Township supervisors to ask for their support.
Stefl reported that so far, 614 names appear on the petition. He has garnered signatures from the Mount Pleasant post office and fire department, the Regional Family YMCA, Kraisinger’s Market, Swing and Hit Golf, and numerous other businesses and residents in the area.
‘I also received a really complimentary letter from Frick Hospital,’ Stefl said, adding that state Rep. James Shaner will set up a meeting with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation concerning the matter.
‘We’ve been pursuing this for a number of years,’ supervisor Joel Suter said, noting that PennDOT has previously opposed the idea of a traffic light because there is too much sight distance. However, the supervisors agreed to back the petition in the hopes that PennDOT’s opinion will change.
In other business, Ray Janesko inquired about the repaving of Quarry and Reservoir streets. Supervisors said that, according to the contractor, the project should get under way in about three weeks. Also, oil and chips will be spread on Kendi Road Extension soon. Other roads have already been treated.
In addition, supervisors approved building permits for John R. Bandemer Jr., Sebastian and Nola Lonigro, Wayne Palmer, Aaron and Carey Colbert, Brenda Kuhn and James M. Grabiak. The Thrash Plan 3 subdivision was approved as well.
