Surprising 'Sisterhood' defeats 'Fears' locally

The sisters did well — so well they blindsided an allegedly big new action comedy. Women turned out in such healthy numbers for "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" that even though they represented 80 percent of the audience, they pushed the picture into second place nationally in its debut and first place here. The film, which doubles back and forth within three time frames for four lifelong friends, stars Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd, Ellen Burstyn, Maggie Smith, Shirley Knight, Fionnula Flanagan and James Garner. Holding the top spot nationally for the second week running is "The Sum of All Fears," which slips to second place locally. It's off 40 percent across North America and 46 percent here. Third locally is "Star Wars: Episode 2 — Attack of the Clones," down 41 percent here. "Spider-Man" spins into fourth place here in its sixth week, down 42 percent. "Insomnia" is good for fifth, off 40 percent. "Spirit — Stallion of the Cimarron" takes sixth place locally, sliding 32 percent, the smallest drop among the top 10. It's about to face a lot more family competition from "Scooby-Doo" (Friday), "Lilo & Stitch" (June 21), "Hey, Arnold!" (June 28) and "The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course" (July 12). "Bad Company," an ill-fitting mix of terrorism and high jinks with Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins, is performing far beneath expectations. It's debuting in fourth place nationally and seventh place here, giving formulaic blockbuster producer Jerry Bruckheimer his worst opening in 18 years. Eighth locally is "Undercover Brother," down 33 percent. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" finally got here and opened semi-wide in seven theaters. Business is just fair at most sites, which might impede the romantic comedy's ability to build word of mouth. It probably should have avoided opening against "Ya-Ya." No. 10 here is "Enough," off 49 percent and heading for bargain houses. Due Friday are "The Bourne Identity," "Scooby-Doo," "Windtalkers" and "Janice Beard: 45 Words Per Minute." "The Salton Sea," which was to open June 7, has slipped into limbo.
