Survey: Light Up Night not so bright

A survey shows that Pittsburgh’s Light Up Night might not be such a bright idea.

The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership has surveyed 177 people and found 79 percent say they did not spend any money in department stores during the mid-November event, which kicks off the city’s Christmas shopping season. Eighty-five-percent say they don’t spend money in specialty stores, either.

Still, partnership CEO Mike Edwards says the celebration does some good.

The company that did the survey estimates 200,000 people attended the event last year and spent a total of $5.1 million. And the survey shows those who did spend money spent a lot: more than $200 each in department stores and more than $180 in specialty stores.
