A Greensburg woman who could face the death penalty for killing a mentally challenged woman has given birth to a girl, her attorney said Monday.

Amber Meidinger, 20, one of six people charged with the Feb. 11 torture-slaying of 30-year-old Jennifer Daugherty in a Greensburg apartment they shared, gave birth yesterday afternoon, according to her attorney, Emily Smarto.

Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty against Meidinger; Melvin Knight, 20; and Ricky Smyrnes, 24, if they are convicted of first-degree murder in the slaying. The prosecution identified the three as the ringleaders in the torture and fatal stabbing of Daugherty.

Meidinger has said that Knight is the father of the baby.

Also charged with first-degree murder were Peggy Darlene Miller, 27; Robert Loren Masters, 36; and Angela Marinucci, 18.

Smarto could not say who will care for the child.

"I don't know what will happen next," Smarto said.

Westmoreland County Children's Bureau Executive Director Shara Saveikis, who spoke in generalities, previously said her agency would first attempt to find a relative to care for a child before placing her in foster care.
