An Allegheny County judge sentenced a Pittsburgh attorney to jail on Tuesday, saying he practiced law without a license.

Common Pleas Judge Randall B. Todd found Charles Hoebler, 51, in civil contempt of court for representing a client on May 9 while Hoebler’s law license was suspended.

Todd sentenced Hoebler to six months in jail but said he could get out of jail by paying $500 to the National Council of Jewish Women, Pittsburgh Section, and $250 to the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office. Court staff said Hoebler paid the fine.

The National Council of Jewish Women runs a children’s room at the courthouse. The money to the sheriff’s office is to defray costs to transport Hoebler’s client, who must be resentenced.
