Eight Shuman Juvenile Detention Center workers who Allegheny County officials tried to fire are returning to work this week docked with a five-day suspension, according to settlement documents made public Monday.

The guards spent more than four months out of work, but will be paid for all of it but five days, according to arbitrator Elliot Newman's ruling. Newman did not provide any explanation for his decision, only the awards.

Shuman administrators are allowing workers to return to their units only as observers, and they will not be allowed to work alone until later this week, Shuman Director William "Jack" Simmons said. It could take 60 days to update them on all their missed training, he added.
