Entries for this month's Home Plate recipe contest theme -- Tailgating -- are now being accepted. Readers should submit the recipe for their best tailgating dish with a completed entry form now. Deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Sept. 12.
Monthly winners receive a $25 gift certificate from Shop 'n Save and are automatically eligible for the grand prize -- a $500 gift certificate from Shop 'n Save -- to be determined and awarded at the Home Plate Cooking Expo, April 25, 2004, at Westmoreland County Community College, near Youngwood.
Faculty from the Hospitality Programs at WCCC -- Mary Zappone, Cheryl Byers Shipley, Cindy Komarinski and Carl Dunkel -- serve as judges for the contest.
The recipe contest runs through March 2004. On the first Wednesday of each month, a new theme is announced along with stories featuring area food professionals with expertise in the theme. Readers then submit their recipes. Entries are judged on taste and originality, as well as appropriateness to the theme. Please submit recipes during the appropriate entry period. Look for entry forms in the Food section every Wednesday and Sunday during the entry period. One winner will be chosen each month. The winning recipe will be published the last Wednesday of the month.
At the end of the contest, the nine monthly winners will vie for the grand prize. The winning recipes will be prepared by students of WCCC's culinary arts and baking programs at the Home Plate Cooking Expo. Those in attendance will vote to decide the grand prize winner.
