A Tarentum youth was shot by two assailants New Year's Day in the presence of family members during what police said was a home invasion.

The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. at 806 Short St., and the suspects remained at large Thursday night, according to Allegheny County detectives who would not give their names for attribution.

Allegheny County property records indicate the house is owned by Richard S. Fox.

Several police officers confirmed that the house is the home of Richard and Brenda Fox.

The youth, who is believed to be 16 or 17, was taken by ambulance to Children's Hospital, Pittsburgh, in critical condition, detectives said. He was suffering from a single gunshot wound and was in surgery Thursday night.

Police said the suspects are a white male and a light-skinned black male, both in their late teens or early 20s.

“They walked in and confronted the homeowners and fired a single shot,” one of the detectives said.

He said nothing was taken from the house, and the suspects fled after firing the shot.

The detectives said several people were in the house at the time of the incident but there were no witnesses outside who could provide any information.

Police from Fawn, Brackenridge and Harrison joined Tarentum police in blocking off a portion of Short Street in front of the house and canvassing the neighborhood door-to-door looking for witnesses.

They were sorting through surveillance footage from video cameras at the Allegheny County Housing Authority apartments on Mill Street, just below Short Street and across from shooting scene. They also were reviewing footage from other surveillance cameras in the vicinity.
