A California middle-school teacher has been charged with having sex with two 13-year-old boys.

Sarah Bench-Salorio appeared in court Thursday in Orange County to face charges of lewd conduct with a child under 14 and other offenses, the Los Angeles Times reports. Prosecutors say that the first sexual relationship began shortly after she started teaching at the Santiago Charter Middle School and continued for 16 months, while the second lasted four months.

Bench-Salorio was supposed to teach her students reading and writing, said District Attorney Tony Rucksacks -- "Instead, these victims had to learn lessons they should not know about yet."

The teacher allegedly wooed both boys, telephoning them, sending them e-mails and buying them dinner. She was arrested after one boy told his parents, and they went to police.

Bench-Salorio's husband ran unsuccessfully for the Orange County school board. The couple have two foster children.
