Teen seriously hurt when deer hits auto
A large deer jumping a concrete barrier on Interstate 70 Monday smashed through the windshield of a Chevrolet Blazer, sending a 14-year-old passenger to the hospital.
Logan Engle, of Fairborn, Ohio, was flown by helicopter to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh after rescue personnel extricated him from the vehicle.
The youth was in critical but stable condition last night, a hospital spokesman said.
The driver, John A. Wolfe, no age given, also of Fairborn, was not injured, police said.
The deer, which was killed in the accident, attempted to jump the barrier near the Madison exit in Westmoreland County. It landed on Wolfe's Blazer, injuring Engle, who was in the front passenger seat, police said.
The vehicle was towed from the scene.
Two people died in hunting-related accidents in the state yesterday, according to authorities.
Taylor Cavallaro, 14, of Southbury, Conn., was fatally shot while walking with family members in Cameron County, about 110 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
The teen died when a gun his 20-year-old brother was carrying accidentally discharged, Potter County Coroner Kevin Dusenbury Sr. said.
Melvin R. Hughes, 50, of Finleyville, died of an apparent heart attack, according to the Washington County coroner.
Another hunter saw Hughes wave before he appeared to lie down in a field in Fallowfield Township around 7:30 a.m. The hunter walked to where he last saw Hughes about 15 minutes later and found him unconscious.
