What kind of American passes top secrets to the Chineseâ¢
He is Ronald N. Montaperto, a former government analyst who received a three-month prison sentence in exchange for a guilty plea and his cooperation.
What kind of American refuses to help the FBI track down Chinese spies because he's miffed that Mr. Montaperto was "stung" by the FBI?
He is Robert G. Sutter, a former national intelligence officer and a Georgetown University professor.
Mr. Sutter circulated an e-mail to about 30 current and former government officials urging them, as he did, to refuse cooperation with FBI agents engaged in counterintelligence against the Chinese.
" ... I could not trust them (FBI agents) or have any assurance that they would not use any information I provided in some way that would hurt me or others," Sutter wrote in the e-mail, obtained by Bill Gertz of The Washington Times.
Consider why Sutter might be worried and would urge silence among a select group.
Montaperto's disclosures "coincided with the loss of a major eavesdropping program against China" tracking illicit arms sales into the Middle East, Mr. Gertz writes.
Montaperto was a member of the "Red Team," a group of academics and government officials passionately pro-China, much as others in earlier eras were mesmerized by Josef Stalin.
What moral imbecility. It is such a pity so few in and out of the government learn from history.
