The Middle East: Weasels!

Those at the highest levels of the U.S. government must have gotten into a batch of weasel chow. For if they eat like weasels, they soon start to speak and act like weasels. As early as today, the U.S. House of Representatives was prepared to vote on a resolution of solidarity with Israel. In draft form, circulated last week, it condemns ''the ongoing support and coordination of terror'' by Yasser Arafat and questions whether he is a "viable partner for peace," which he of course is not. Sponsored by House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, the Texas Republican, and Rep. Tom Lantos, a California Democrat, the nonbinding resolution states that the House "stands in solidarity with Israel as it takes the necessary steps to provide security to its people by dismantling the terrorist infrastructure in the Palestinian areas.'' The resolution also supports ''additional United States assistance to help Israel.'' Yet Secretary of State Colin Powell made a personal plea for the House to postpone the resolution. Weasel I. Quipped an administration official, ''I would just say that (the resolution) is nonbinding." Weasel II. After a Friday call from a senior administration official, Mr. DeLay agreed to postpone floor consideration. Weasel III and Weasel IV. So, what's the problem• The administration fears such a resolution could seriously harm U.S. relations with "moderate" Arab states. What, offend terrorists and their benefactors? Oh, for heaven's sake! The House needs to bring this resolution to the floor - now . It needs to pass it - unanimously . For somebody needs to start dispelling the notion that the United States would rather play the role of Arafat's appeaser than Israel's ally.
