The official ”official” announcement has yet to come. But there’s no doubt that state Attorney General Mike Fisher is running for governor. And, thus far, he’s saying a lot of the right things. Mr. Fisher, the Republican of Upper St. Clair, Allegheny County, who’s already solidly supported by the GOP hierarchy, rallied the faithful last week at Station Square in Pittsburgh. He outlined the fundamentals of his coming campaign not so much with state Treasurer Barbara Hafer in the primary but with whomever is the Democrat nominee. Indeed, much of what Fisher said was boilerplate ”stumping on the hustings.” There was the usual fealty to ”jobs.” And there was the prerequisite tip of the hat to ”public safety.” We don’t mention that intending any pejorative; we simply note the fact. Fisher did offer a smidgen more insight into his third priority – education. And every rationally thinking Pennsylvanian should appreciate what he had to say. He of course believes in more accountability. And he rightly notes that while every child can’t be ”guaranteed” success, children can be guaranteed ”an opportunity.” To that end, ”Maybe the public schools need a little competition to improve failing schools,” he added. The ”eduaucracy” certainly won’t like those ”fightin’ words” – but we do. And we look forward to hearing the full details of Mike Fisher’s education plan as the gubernatorial campaign shifts into higher gear.
