The Thursday wrap
START stopped: The Obama administration had been pulling out all the stops in its public relations campaign to get the lame-duck Senate to ratify the new arms-limitation treaty with the Russians. But then Sen. John Kyl of Arizona, the Senate’s No. 2 Republican, whom Democrats hoped to woo, said “Nyet.” He cited the lack of time to properly debate the proposed treaty before year’s end. Actually, New START is a lousy agreement that favors Moscow and directly threatens the security of the United States. Period.
Earth to pols: Democrats were so severely slapped around in the Nov. 2 elections, it’s hard to imagine that they still don’t get it. But they don’t, as evidenced by their continuing refusal to consider extending the Bush-era tax cuts for “the rich.” Worse, some Republicans are advocating a temporary extension — two or three years. Like there’s the salve of certainty for businesses trying to plan for the future, right⢠Congress is sure to screw this up and everybody’s taxes will rise on Jan. 1. And what a march on Washington that will be.
Ed’s debt: Lame-duck Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell loves to brag about his fiscal stewardship. Never mind that the commonwealth’s debt rose from $6.1 billion to $9.2 billion during Fast Eddie’s tenure. No send-off party will be complete for this fella without a big bucket of warm tar and big bag of itchy feathers.
