Think comfort when buying boots for fall

Question: After wearing sandals all summer, I find my fall boots really hurt my feet. Should I go one size larger than my actual size• Wear thicker socks?

Answer: It's usually best to stick with your true size, taking into account the thickness of the hosiery you plan to wear with your boots. But to ease your "sandal feet" into more-confining boots or shoes, choose styles in soft leather, which has more stretch than patent leather or synthetics.

The following tips from the American Podiatric Medical Association should also help:

Have your feet measured before buying new boots. Your foot size can change over time. And keep in mind that boot size is not the same in all brands and styles. Always try on footwear and walk around on a hard surface before buying.

• Try on boots in the afternoon, as feet tend to swell during the day.

• Most feet are not the exact same size, so buy for the larger foot.

• Boots should fit comfortably when you first slip them on. They should not need to be broken in.

• A boot made of natural materials, such as leather, will keep feet more dry and comfortable than synthetics.

• Choose boots with plenty of toe room, a sturdy heel and non-slip sole to insure stability.

Now, I understand that pointy-toe, stiletto-heel boots look sensational and are the height of fashion. But the price you pay, in addition to dollars, is foot, leg and back pain. So keep that in mind when buying new boots.

Fashion for the office

Q: My daughter keeps complaining about the conservative attire she is expected to wear for her banking job. How can I help her personalize her business look?

A: Business basics, such as white shirts and dark skirts or pants, don't have to lack fashionable styling. For example, instead of a standard Oxford shirt, she could choose one with a more-fitted cut and three-quarter, French-cuffed sleeves. She could replace basic black pants with a sleek, flat-front style or wide-leg trousers. Or seek out a stylish pencil skirt -- or even a full, short (just above the knee) style to team with a cropped, fitted jacket.

Then she can add a little personal flair with accessories: ankle boots instead of pumps; an unusual watch or necklace; or a handbag in a high-fashion color. And how about a bright trench coat, so she can feel stylish going to and from work?
