Three townships have races for supervisors

Only three Fay-West area township supervisor seats are contested in the Nov. 8 general election. Seven posts were filled during the May primary by six Democrats and a lone Republican, barring any write-ins.

Township supervisors serve six-year terms. Tax collectors serve four-year terms.

South Union Township

Democrat Rick Vernon and Republican Louis Weeger Agostini are seeking the supervisor position left open by Rock Coville, a Democrat and 30-year veteran of the post.

Coville surprised his fellow Democratic supervisors, Robert Schiffbauer and Tom Frankhouser, when he decided in February not to run for re-election. The trio have served the township together for 26 years.

Vernon, a former Fayette County District Judge, retired after 23 years to pursue Coville's vacated post.

Democrat James Conway is the lone candidate for tax collector.

Upper Tyrone Township

Republican William Edwards is set to challenge incumbent Supervisor Jack Fullem, a Democrat.

Fullem, who has served as supervisor for 13 years, overcame Democrat Peter Hanchar in May for the party's nomination. Edwards was unopposed on the Republican side.

Democrat Robert Lewandowski is running unopposed for tax collector.

Springfield Township

A full slate of candidates was whittled down in May to Democrat Bill Striner and Republican Rick Burkholder.

Both candidates received 109 votes in the primary.

Striner overcame Earl Pritts, Ronald Craig, Jim Hall and John Mountain on the Democratic ticket, while Burkholder beat Brian Keith Miller and Larry Yealey on the Republican side.

Matthew Show, who is cross-filed as a Democrat and Republican, is the lone candidate for tax collector.

Saltlick Township

Republican incumbent Rick Gales won his bid for re-election during the May primary against Steve Nietfeld, barring any write-ins. No one is on the Democratic side.

In the tax collector race, Democrat Michael Schloer will face Republican Helen Legas.

Dunbar Township

Larry Mayros beat five other Democrats in the May primary to win the seat left by Eugene Frazier, barring any write-ins.

Frazier did not seek re-election. Mayros beat John Toby Tabaj, Larry Jeffers, Raymond Huffine, Bob Richter Sr. and Sherwood Hughes. There are no Republicans on the ballot.

Democratic incumbent Marigrace Butela is set to face Republican Cara Brooks for tax collector.

North Union Township

Supervisor Thomas Kumor, who is cross-filed as both a Democrat and Republican, won his bid for re-election in May against Democrat Frank Mutnansky, barring any write-ins. No other Republicans appear on the ticket.

Democrat James Mari will face Republican Stephanie Stiner for tax collector.

Bullskin Township

Democrat Scott Keefer beat three other candidates seeking Supervisor John Coughenour's seat on the panel. Coughenour did not seek re-election.

There are no Republicans on the ticket.

Barring any write-ins, Keefer will be the new supervisor. In May, he beat Democrats James Fabian and Mark Whittaker.

Democratic incumbent Louis Bell will retain his position as tax collector, barring any write-ins.

Connellsville Township

Sally Stoots, who cross-filed as a Democrat and Republican, won Democratic incumbent Fred Robbins' seat during the May primary, barring any write-ins.

No Republicans appear on the ticket.

Stoots also overcame Democrat Robert Feniello.

For tax collector, Democrat Rodney Allen will face Republican Andrea Doppelheuer.

Lower Tyrone Township

Sean Ferris won the Democratic bid for Luke Knapp's seat in May. Knapp did not seek re-election.

Ferris beat fellow Democrat Terry McClelland, and, barring any write-ins, will assume the position.

No Republicans are on the ballot.

Democrat Linda Cottom is the sole candidate to bid for tax collector.

Perry Township

Democratic incumbent A.J. Boni has no competition in his bid for re-election.

Democrat Donald Pidanich is the only candidate for tax collector.
