Today, Washington’s oath would be stopped

I found Amesh Adalja’s first letter ( “Ban religion” , July 3 and PghTrib.com) about banning religion from the public square interesting. When George Washington was sworn in as our first president at Federal Hall in New York City, he completed his oath by kissing the Bible and adding, “So help me God.” If only the ACLU had been around much earlier, perhaps it could have put a stop to the ensuing two centuries of errors on the spot. I foresee a new government post that Mr. Adalja may wish to apply for. It would involve sandblasting every reference to “God” or “Providence” from every monument and public building in the District of Columbia. The job security would be excellent.
