Track athletes qualify for state meet

Ligonier Valley High School track and field team members achieved medals, team points and some qualified for the state meet at the PIAA District 6 Championship meet held recently in Altoona.

The Rams team members that qualified for the PA State Championship track and field meet were senior Brandon Dickert, who threw the shot put 48 feet, 6.5 inches for a first-place finish.

Both the girls and boys 4x400-meter relay squads took second in the event. The girls were Jasmine Connor, Miranda Campbell, Madi McLaughlin and Stephanie Heming. The boys consisted of Nate Crusan, Jon Finger, Dylan Jackman and Justin Piper.

Piper also qualified in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.98 seconds and a second-place finish. He came back again in the 110-meter hurdles, 15.97 seconds and snagged third place.

The Ligonier athletes that made it to the podium were Connor, who placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles and Stuart Urch with a fifth place in the discus throw.

Sixth place went to Campbell in the 400-meter dash, Anthony Thomas took sixth in the 200-meter dash, Michaela Long finished sixth in the long jump and Nathan Crusan logged in sixth in the triple jump. The 4x100-meter relay squad consisting of Levi Gaynor, Jackman, Thomas and Mike Keller also tagged sixth.

Rebecca Kromel landed seventh in the long jump along with the boys 4x800-meter relay squad although the runners names were not listed in the results. Gina McKlveen came in eighth in the 800-meter run and also earned a trip to the podium.

In the final results, the girls team ranked ninth out of 12 teams and the boys squad came in fourth out of 28 teams competing.

The PA State Champion ship meet took place May 24 and 25 at Shippensburg University.
