Work to replace the track and turf at Fox Chapel Area High School is under way.
The James M. Burk Stadium is closed to students and other residents during the $1.1 million project. Construction is expected to last through early August, so that the stadium is ready for the fall sports season.
Bonnie Berzonski, district coordinator of communications, said the project largely will be funded through the Fox Chapel Area School District's capital projects fund and is included in the district's $94 million budget.
Proceeds from ticket sales to athletic events will help to pay for some of the improvements, she said. The stadium project isn't related to the bond proceeds being used to pay for $46 million in district renovations.
The turf and track at the high school last were replaced in 2007, and life expectancy for the surfaces is eight to 10 years.
“If they aren't replaced in a timely manner, problems could develop and, in turn, could carry a larger price tag,” said Director of Athletics Mike O'Brien.
Last week, crews from Northern Athletic Construction Co. removed the old, bright green turf and heavy equipment was on the field. Work had not begun on the track.
Both facilities are used not only by student athletes, but by physical education classes and community members for exercise, O'Brien said.
“The community utilizes them frequently,” he said. “We also have sports teams that usually practice over the summer.”
Berzonski said the track and turf are tested each year for safety. While they still were usable, general wear and tear necessitated replacement, she said.
After many years of use, fibers and surfaces begin to break down, O'Brien said. Water and damage from sunlight also take a toll.
Also included in the project will be replacement of the track at Dorsey-ville Middle School on Saxonburg Boulevard.
That facility closed June 1. The track most recently was recoated and cleaned in 2007, at the same time the high school track last was replaced.
