KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- One day, Jim Tracy hopes to earn the honor of skippering the National League All-Star team -- a distinction that goes to the pennant-winning manager from the previous season.
Next month, though, Tracy will be happy to serve as a coach on Phil Garner's staff at the All-Star Game at PNC Park on July 11.
In his first season as the Pirates' manager, Tracy has been selected by Garner to join a National League All-Star coaching staff that also will include former Pirates manager Chuck Tanner as an honorary member.
Tracy will serve as a base coach during the game.
Tracy will be the first Pirates manager to serve as a coach in the All-Star Game since Lloyd McClendon at the 2003 Midsummer Classic in Chicago.
This All-Star Game is becoming a haven for members of the Pirates' extended family.
Garner and Tanner were part of the Pirates' 1979 world championship club, and Pirates head athletic trainer Brad Henderson will also work the game.
Cincinnati's Jerry Narron will serve as Garner's other base coach.
